Reddit shadowbans, explained

Shadowbans are the most confusing punishment on Reddit because nothing tells you it happened. Here is how they work, how to test for one, and how to keep your accounts out of trouble.

What a shadowban does

A Reddit shadowban (sometimes written "shadow ban") is an account-level ban applied by Reddit's admins, not by a subreddit's mods. You can keep posting, commenting, and voting, and to you everything looks normal. To everyone else your profile shows "page not found", your posts never appear in feeds, and your comments are invisible. Your votes stop counting too.

Reddit uses shadowbans mostly against spam, bots, and ban evasion, because telling a spammer they're banned just prompts them to make a new account.

How to tell if you are shadowbanned on Reddit

The quickest shadowban test is the one this tool runs: open your profile while logged out. Our checker does that for you from a clean, logged-out session and also checks whether the username is still registered, which separates a shadowbanned account from one that never existed.

You can do a manual test too. Open a private browser window, go to reddit.com/user/yourname, and see whether the profile loads. If it loads but a specific post is missing from the subreddit, you are not shadowbanned; that post was removed by mods or held by AutoMod.

Shadowban, suspension, or subreddit ban?

A suspension is a visible site-wide ban: Reddit tells you, and the profile shows as suspended. A subreddit ban only blocks you from one community and comes with a message from its mods. Some mods also use AutoMod to silently remove everything a specific user posts in their subreddit, which feels like a shadowban but only applies there. If our checker says your account is active but one subreddit keeps eating your posts, that is the likely cause.

How long does a shadowban last?

Usually until it is lifted on appeal. Shadowbans do not expire on a timer the way temporary suspensions do. File an appeal at reddit.com/appeals, be honest about what happened, and do not create replacement accounts while you wait, because ban evasion makes every future account easier to flag.

How to avoid a shadowban when marketing on Reddit

Most marketing shadowbans come from the same patterns: a new account that starts promoting on day one, the same link dropped across many subreddits, near-identical replies, or several accounts on one IP. Give accounts weeks of normal activity first, vary what you say, reply only where your product genuinely answers the question, and keep promotion a small share of what the account does.

The usual triggers are posting the same link across many subreddits, replying with near-identical promotional comments, brand-new accounts that start promoting on day one, many accounts on one IP, and vote manipulation. Accounts that comment normally for a few weeks before they mention anything commercial get flagged far less often.
